ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of critical information and insight, has become a signatory of the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP) in a continued effort to actively participate in, and contribute to, advancing equality.

The WEP, a set of seven principles that offer guidance on empowering women in the workplace, marketplace and community, was created through a collaboration between the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and the United Nations Global Compact. Launched in 2010, the WEP has grown to become the largest business-led gender equality initiative in the world, endorsed by approximately 1,200 CEOs from more than 80 countries.

The participation of IHS in the WEP represents a significant and actionable step in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, which seeks to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. IHS is also active with the Women’s Leadership Foundation, among other diversity-related programs and initiatives.

“At IHS, we recognize and value the importance and power of diversity and its criticality to the sustainable success of our business and company,” said Jerre Stead, IHS chairman and CEO. “Signing on to the UN WEP is a natural step, signaling our commitment towards empowering all colleagues, and supporting the development and empowerment of women globally in advancing an inclusive, productive and fair society.”

Sustainability is also a core element of the solutions that IHS provides to its customers. Earlier this week, for example, Dell announced the launch of the Dell Women Entrepreneur Cities Index (WE Cities), with global findings powered by IHS research. This index is the only gender-specific research that examines global cities’ ability to attract and support high potential women entrepreneurs.
