Chief Automotive Economist
Mr. Nigel Griffiths is Chief Automotive Economist for IHS Automotive. He has been with IHS since 1992, during which time he has pioneered analysis of global platform strategies, predicted the extreme fragmentation now occurring in Europe’s auto market and developed a predictive defection model for consumer behavior in the face of impending CO2 legislation. Earlier in his career, he worked for an international automotive consulting company, where he developed new analytical approaches to accommodate anticipated structural change in car consumer behavior at both regional and city levels in response to global adaptation of new urban mobility patterns. Mr. Griffiths has 25 years of direct experience in analyzing and forecasting demand trends and car sales in the global automotive industry. He has consulted on forecast projects, including complex market segmentation studies, impact assessments of emissions and CO2 legislation, competitive positioning of OEMs, deep-sea car transportation flows, production strategies, platform consolidation, OEM strategies, end-of-life exposure forecasting, and alternative market simulation models. His current role involves the development of sensitivity and scenario-based forecasting. His work on deep-dive methodologies for China and its provinces helps steer the core global and country-level light vehicle forecasts for IHS Automotive.Mr. Griffiths holds a first-class honors degree in Economics, a master’s degree in Industrial and Business Economics, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Cardiff Business School in Wales, UK, where he specialized in the economics of the motor industry. He has received numerous awards for study and analysis, including the Alexander Duckhams Prize of the Institute of the Motor Industry, the Adam Smith Medal and the Sir Julian Hodge Prize of the University of Wales.
